Mt. Eden at Vega in the Railyard on Friday March 20, 2015

mtedenThe dub-step duo from New Zealand is back in the Good Life.  Kiwis Jesse Cooper and Harley Rayner, formerly known as Mt Eden Dubstep, have been gaining popularity since 2009 when their first remix of Freshlygrounds song “I’d Like” went viral. The majority of their music combines experimental techniques such as drill n bass drumming, wall of noise dynamics, and bass drops with more traditional pop ideas such as strophic song forms and catchy monophonic synth leads.

Cooper and Rayner started making music since their early teens; they originally started creating hip-hop influenced mix-tapes, remember those things called cassettes? However that all changed after they attended New Zealand’s music festival “Phat09.” There they had their minds blown after watching the dub-step pioneers Benga and Skream’s performance. That is when they changed directions and dipped their hands into drum & bass initially, then moved on to creating dub-step. MT Eden’s sound has gained notoriety for its dichotic mood and it’s accumulation of different styles stemming from influences such as Baths, Doctor P, Ben Sage, Tokyo Prose, Hudson Mohawke, Skrillex, and James Blake.

Ditching the Dub-step from their name hasn’t affected the progress of Auckland production duo Cooper and Rayner as they put themselves firmly on the map – 100 million YouTube plays and counting, world tours, major hook-ups, and an album release in the works. Since their release of their most popular song “Sierra Leone,” a remix of Freshlyground’s “I’d Like,” has made Mt Eden, and dub-step as a genre boom in popularity. Their latest song “Distance Kills,” just released and there should be more new music on the way.

Vega in Lincoln is just one of the many stops that they are making on their tour. In the past they have made appearances at major festivals such as Electric Zoo, Skylab, and Coachella. This year they are headed to Electric Forest, and a special appearance at Burning Man. Do not miss this show at Vega on Friday March 20, 2015. The show starts at 9 p.m. and is for anybody over 18, tickets are only $15 in advance and $18 day of show.
